rEFORMATION
The Reformation had to happen first bc with the Reformation you didn’t have to accept the church and more and more people’s ideas became clear. They started saying the church doesn’t decide how your going to heaven, you do! It became a personal choice!
Rene Descartes: Really pushed the idea of personal chose. We are still feeling and thinking his thoughts. He didn’t really want to accept the church so he wanted a reason. He mentally deconstructed everything and questioned everything about it. “What is the most basic thing that I know” “Cogito ergo sum”-- “I think therefore I am.” Instead of accepting authority, he started rationalism/ reason. He started questioning the church.
Deism: God is in control but he is above, he created law. Creation operates according to mechanical laws. Like a clock: clock-work image-- Sin: if you know the laws, you know all God does. (Adam and Eve’s first sin) therefore you don’t need God anymore.
Faith and Reason: Had their roots in Descartes: American Revolution: Faith and Reason: exists side by side. French Revolution: rationalism is rebelling against church authority: faith vs. reason. They were burning church, killing priests, etc. Arab Spring: young are questioning church leaders. Aran, Pakistan, etc: they are choosing faith. They are still having wars over faith vs reason that came all the way back from Descartes.
